Republicans, Democrats agree: Law enforcement must be careful when using facial recognition technology.

“We need to ensure that the adoption of this new technology that does not further erode trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve,” Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) said.

Nadler says it’s clear why law enforcement is embracing the technology, but there are problems.

Facial recognition can be a useful tool of law enforcement, but safeguards are needed to prevent abuse. A software glitch could flag the wrong person as a wanted criminal. The police must use human judgment, not programming, to make a final determination. All suspects are innocent until found guilty in a court of law! Please consider contacting your Representative and Senators to urge them to consider Constitutional protections when drafting facial recognition laws!
